Day of MC "Odbrana" marked
In the Great Hall of the Central Military Club of the Serbian Armed Forces, "Odbrana" Media Centre celebrated the day when the first issue of the Serbian military magazine "Warrior" was published in 1879, whose tradition was continued by "Odbrana" magazine, as well as 134 years of military press in Serbia.
The ceremony was attended by State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Aleksandar Nikolic, Chief of General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces Lieutenant General Ljubisa Dikovic, representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, as well as our successful athletes, guests, associates and friends of the editorial staff.
Traditionally, the awards were given to the winner of the journalism prize "Ivan Markovic", then to the most successful journalist and associate of "Odbrana" magazine as well as to the best athlete and the sports team of the Serbian Armed Forces in the year 2012. These are the actions that the Media Centre and the editorial board of "Odbrana" magazine, formerly the "Vojska" News and Information Centre and the namesake magazine, have conducted since 1994 when they were established.
This year's winner of the journalism prize "Ivan Markovic" is a journalist of "Vecernje Novosti", Ivan Lovric, for his text "Jelen (Deer) faster than sound," published in "Vecernje Novosti" on 28 October 2012. The award encourages journalists who follow the activities of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces to properly report in the local printed and electronic media. It also affirms and publicly verifies their work, and keeps the memory of Ivan Markovic, one of the most gifted military reporters and editors in the "Vojska" magazine, who died in 2003 at the age of 43. Ivan Lovric was awarded the journalism prize by State Secretary Aleksandar Nikolic.
In the explanation by the jury it is said that "the reporter is rewarded for his reporter article in the column "Destiny", in the Belgrade daily, and the research efforts in fostering sense, which is traditionally well-established, of belonging to the Army across many generations. The story of the hereditary "heavenly office" in the Jelen family was a kind of media contribution to the hundredth anniversary of the military aviation in Serbia.
The panel of judges for the award of journalism prize "Ivan Markovic" was chaired by Borivoj Erdeljan, correspondent of "Politika" in retirement, and the members were Veljko Djurovic, a war photographer and lecturer at the University of Arts, Dejan Miljkovic, journalist of “Tanjug” agency, Stanoje Jovanovic, former Director and Editor-in-Chief of the "Vojska" magazine and Colonel Milivoje Pajovic, Head of Public Relations Department.
At today's ceremony, traditionally, for the nineteenth time, the best athlete and sports team of the Serbian Armed Forces were declared. Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Ljubisa Dikovic handed the trophy and awards to the members of the athletic team of the Training Command.
The team of the Training Command in the military all-around competition, that won the Sports Championship of our military in 2012 for the fourth consecutive year, sixth place at the European Championship in the military all-around competition in Austria, whose members are the backbone of the team of the Serbian Armed Forces in military pentathlon, was chosen as the best one in the year behind us.
The team captain, Captain Borko Lukovic, from the AF&AD Training Centre in Batajnica Lieutenant Srdjan Djuric, NCO Training Centre in Pancevo, Second Lieutenant Zeljko Petrovic, Platoon Leader for the security of facilities at the all-service training ground "Pasuljanske livade" and privates Milan Mikic and Nikola Zivaljevic from the Communications, information and electronic warfare Training Centre in Milanovac, were trained by Captain Dubravko Maric, serving in the First Training Centre in Sombor.
The best female athlete in the Serbian Armed Forces in 2012 was proclaimed by Private Mariana Cegar Lukic, who won the first place at the Regional Military Half Marathon Championships in Apatin last year, the best placement at the Regional Military Championships in mountain running in Dimitrovgrad, Gold in Half Marathon at the Championship of the Serbian Armed Forces, as well as other high ranking at the national and international sports events. Trophy and award to Private Mariana Cegar Lukic were presented by taekwondo fighter Milica Mandic, our Olympic Champion.
When choosing the best athlete and sports team in the past year, the jury valued as the basic criteria the participation and the results achieved in competitions, especially in the contests sponsored by CISM and many sporting events in which the candidates participated, and presenting the figure of the Serbian Armed Forces in accordance with the "Code of Honor".
The jury, composed of Colonel Dragan Gjini, head of the Section of Military Sports of the Military Academy and a member of the Delegation of Serbia to CISM – President, then, Colonel Zoran Scekic, from the Office of the Minister of Defence, a member of the Delegation of Serbia to CISM – Major Vladimir Pocuc, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of "Odbrana", Lieutenant Velisa Vukasevic, desk officer for sports at the Department for Training and Doctrine in the General Staff and Staff Sergeant Dejan Vukojevic from the Army Training Centre, last year's winner of the "Athlete of the Armed Forces", has estimated that significant results were achieved in 2012 in the military sports in national and international competitions, and in the individual and in the team competitions.
Board of the Editor-in-Chief of the "Odbrana" magazine awarded Biljana Miljic with traditional award "The Most Successful Journalist" for 2012.
Creativity transferred in a precise and clear language expression made her texts to become a recognizable feature of "Odbrana". Recognition "Journalist of the Year" awarded to her by her colleagues, will promote her work and the future of military journalism. The award to Biljana Miljic was presented by Colonel Milivoje Pajovic, Head of Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Defence.
The award for the most successful associate of "Odbrana" magazine in the past year, was presented by the Board of Editor-in-Chief to the historian and journalist Krsman Milosevic, General Retired. He deserved this recognition by his dedicated and systematic work that, during 2012, was mostly devoted to the Serbian military history, particularly the First Balkan War. Most often in the pages of "Feuilleton" in "Odbrana" there are articles by Krsman Milosevic characterized by professional and objective approach to the consideration of historical facts. The award was presented to Krsman Milosevic by the Editor-in-Chief of the "Odbrana" magazine Radenko Mutavdzic.
Head of the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Defence Colonel Milivoje Pajovic reminded that we were marking 134 years of the launching of the "Warrior" magazine, the first official military newspaper in Serbia, which was the realization of the aspirations that the military speaks its own language, thus expressing its views and needs, but also the needs of the people, and that these aspirations were always in compliance with the preservation of freedom and security as the highest national interests.
- "Defence" Media Centre, with its multiple functions, under the roof of the Central Military Club, the former Warriors' house, contributes to the affirmation of the Armed Forces and the results of the work of the Ministry of Defence. "Odbrana" magazine and our web sites make visible efforts of the Armed Forces to be ready for all three of its missions, to continue to contribute to the development and maintenance of peace in the world, Colonel Pajovic said.
Head of the Department pointed out an important novelty brought by the redesigned website of the Ministry of Defence.
- Apart from daily news and a series of useful information for members of the system, there is also a public procurement portal of the Ministry of Defence by which the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces contribute to the strengthening of public administration in the Republic of Serbia, Colonel Pajovic said congratulating the winners and wishing them success in their future work.
Lt. Col. Slavoljub Markovic, the Director of "Odbrana" Media Centre spoke about this house as a kind of a creative workshop which, apart from the "Odbrana" magazine, publishes also scientific and professional military journals, numerous military expert, teaching and educational and publishing literature, as well as promotional material essential for the defence system.
Director of "Odbrana" MC pointed out that the tradition of famous predecessors has been continued in "Odbrana" for eighth years striving to meet the demands of modern times. MC portal is a window to the virtual world, and the web-team of the Public Relations Department and of our institution give us a completely redesigned site of the MoD, with new applications and a range of services that will provide customers interactive access to all necessary information.
- The Central Military Club has become not only the house with widely open doors but also an indispensable one, and I will not be so immodest if I say that it is also a very important point on the cultural map of the capital. We started a new exhibition season by cooperation with the Gallery of Matica Srpska, and now we can announce the appearance of the Memorial Collection of Pavle Beljanski and "Momo Kapor" Legacy, then the Legacy of Mica Popovic and Vera Bozickovic and private collections of Djuro Popovic from Novi Sad. There is another anniversary to be celebrated this year – 60 years of work of The Gallery of the Central Military Club, which has so far organized more than 500 exhibitions.
- Rejuvenation of our house in the past year, by recruitment of twelve young colleagues, brought new blood and energy to the press and information activities, that enabled our reporters and photographers to cover nearly 1,000 media events in the defence system, from which they published articles in "Odbrana" magazine and on websites of MoD, SAF and MC. Photo archives have been enriched with 93,000 digital records, and in collaboration with colleagues from the "Zastava film" Military Film Centre also prepared more than 1,200 videos, Lt. Col. Markovic said.
Lieutenant Colonel Markovic presented the letters of thanks to the Historical Archives of Pozarevac, Dr. Dragoljub Milicevic, Galleries of Paintings "Sava Sumanovic" from Sid, Cultural Centre from Lazarevac, the Museum of Naïve and Marginal Art Jagodina, Vrsac City Museum and the National Museum of Pozarevac.
