Presentation of the Book “Nighthawk Down” at the Military Academy

A book “Nighthawk Down” written by Colonel Slaviša Golubović was presented today at the Military Academy. The promotion of the currently most read and most sold edition of “Odbrana” Media Centre was attended by Head of the Military Academy, Major General Goran Zeković and the cadets.

The Editor of the “Odbrana” Media Centre, Mirjana Sandić, and Director of the “Odbrana” Media Centre, Colonel Stevica S. Karapandžin and the author spoke about the book.

With the approval of the Minister of Defence, the book of the Colonel Golubović has been presented today to all the cadets of the Air Defence Department and to their superior officers as an additional educational material. Colonel Karapandžin presented the opus of the publishing house to the present and emphasised the importance of written word for the military science and historiography. About the book “Nighthawk Down” he said that it was the “embodiment of our endeavour to give a testimony of the modern Serbian war glory”

-We wanted to offer reading audience and the historiography the authentic testimony of the active participants in this event. Twenty directly involved participants, from the Brigade Commander to soldiers, had given in forty statements their perception of the event that had happened on 27th March in the Donji Srem air space – said Colonel Karapandžin and pointed out that the “Nighthawk Down” was one of the rare books whose first edition was sold out in a very short time.

Desiring today’s book presentation to resemble an interactive class, Colonel Golubović sent a word, by means of an electronic book and video animation, to the cadets that the events of 1999 were extremely significant and that they were described and explained in detailin the book. He also stressed that he had owed that book to himself for many years.

-As a former member of 3rd Rocket Battalion I owe it also to its ex and current members. Furthermore, 3rd Battalion owes the book to the 250th Rocked Brigade as a written example of bravery, knowledge and art of war and commanding skill and self-sacrificing, while the Brigade owes the book to the Armed Forces and the people of Serbia – said the author of the book.

At the end of today’s book presentation, General Zeković addressed the audience and he underlined that such books require “having time for them” and that the Military Academy was a fertile ground where such books should be presented. The book “Nighthawk Down” is currently being sold in eight towns of ex-Yugoslavia, and in the United States of America, Russia, Canada, Australia and Slovakia.

Shooting down F-117A is one of the most exemplary successes of our Armed Forces during the NATO aggression. The book was created as an attempt to fully shed light on all the facts and circumstances that had led to the shooting down of the “Invisible”. The author, who was a member of the crew that shot down the F-117A, gave an opportunity to all the members of the combat crew, a great number of the members of the war unit, as well as the individuals out of the unit to illuminate the war successes of the Serbian Air Defence. Many gathered pieces of information provide a new insight into the sequence of dramatic events.  The book is read as a scenario for a documentary film, thus being intended not only for expert, but also wider reading audience.
