The Day of Disabled Veterans of Serbia marked
The Association of disabled wartime and peacetime veterans of Serbia organised in the Central Military Club a Ceremony to mark 150 years since the adoption of the first Law on the disabled veterans in Serbia, two decades since the renewal of the DWPV Association and 100 issues of the journal "Disabled veterans", launched in 1995.
The celebration began with the solemn session of the Republic Committee of the DWPV Association in the House of Disabled Veterans of Belgrade, where the most deserving members were presented annual awards for their selfless work and the expressed enthusiasm. Then, to commemorate the adoption of the first Law on the disabled veterans in Serbia, wreaths and flowers were laid at the monument to its maker Prince Mihailo at the Square of the Republic and then an appropriate exhibition on disabled veterans, prepared by the DWPV Association of Serbia, Odbrana Media Centre and the Military Museum, was opened in the hall of the Central Military Club.
A rich collection of documents, photographs and film footage is invaluable evidence about the tragic history of the Serbian people on the ground that is characterised by its history instead of its geography. This exhibition is not just a silent cry of veterans because of difficult position of heroes of many wars who fought for freedom in this area, but also the testimony of inextinguishable patriotism and strength of the people who fought within the limits of their own ethnicity, from Nevesinjski uprising across many rebellions, Balkan and world wars, and the most recent conflicts and the destructions of the common state not attacking anyone and not endangering anyone's freedom.
Welcoming the guests at the solemn ceremony, which was attended, among others, by representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defence, the Serbian Armed Forces, Association of Veterans of Slovenia and the Republic of Srpska, similar associations of Serbia and many veterans, the President of the DWPV Association of Serbia, Retired General Miroslav Lazovic, said that recent changes in international relations and the character of contemporary wars raise many questions and dilemmas in the field of legal protection for disabled veterans.
At the end of the solemn ceremony there followed a celebratory artistic program with participation of drama artists Jelena Zigon and Lepomir Ivkovic, baritone Aleksa Vasic and Ekstra Nena, accompanied by the MoD "Stanislav Binički" orchestra.
