Presentation of the book "1914-2014 Why Review"
In the Ceremonial Hall of the Central Military Club today, the book "1914 – 2014 Why Review?” by Mile Bjelajac, PhD, published by Odbrana Media Centre on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the First World War, has been promoted.
The speakers about the book, which is the first in Serbia to controvert the trend of the review of the role of Serbia in 1914, in a scientific and popular way, were Prof. Milan Ristovic, the reviewer, Miroslav Perisic, PhD, Director of the Archives of Serbia and the author.
The guests were welcomed by Lieutenant Colonel Slavoljub Markovic, Director of Odbrana Media Centre, who pointed out that the book of Dr Bjelajac is the first in Serbia to controvert the trend of the review of the role of Serbia in 1914, in a scientific and popular way.
- That is the reason why we decided to come out to the newsstands with this title for the first time in a few days, and it represents a very important innovation in our business, but also the demand of time which we did not ignore. Today, we put for the judgement of the public, new work, together with its author, joining in the activities to mark the centenary of the Great War, Lieutenant Colonel Markovic said.
Professor Ristovic emphasized that one of the ways to “survive” in a scientific and rational way the year 1914 and the circumstances that led up to everything that the First World War produced, it a critical analytical deflection in order to approach this topic again with scientific rationality as much as it is possible.
- It was one of the main encouragements for the author to begin such task that was not an easy one. He tried to analyse the phenomenon that has grown to literally "metastasize" in the interwar period. The key point of the book is the interference of different policies in different periods of the European history into what should be a purely scientific historiography issue. I would recommend readers to make their own judgement on everything that is found within the book, on more than 200 pages, the reviewer said.
The Director of the Archives of Serbia said that a document is not history, but there is no history without documents.
- This is something that is observed and monitored throughout all chapters of the book by Mile Bjelajac. He is not the first nor the only historian among the Serbian historians who thinks and discusses this topic, but he is the first and the only one who wrote a book about that, and thus made the breakthrough that introduces him to the international exchange of knowledge on the topic of the outbreak of the First World War. This topic has not been leaving humanity for 100 years, and on the occasion of that jubilee it is interpreted specifically renewed vigor in different ways – from science, through seeing it by the artistic world to politics, said Dr Perisic.
According to Mile Bjelajac, the book is a picture of our time and kind of controversy with the trend of the review.
- Like any writer, I would like our students, colleagues and the audience to read this collected scientific information structured around several the most common disputes, measure of Serbia's participation in the commencement of the First World War, to recognize easier what is offered to them or suggested with the renowned scientific authority, the author said, and thanked all associates and friends who have supported the publication of the book.
Dragana Markovic, Head of Publishing Activity of Odbrana Media Centre, who is also the chief editor, has run today's promotion.
Clarifying the old and new controversies about the causes of the First World War, as it is written in the subtitle, the book is in part a response of the author and the publisher to the great interest of the public, which was spurred by the feuilleton on the topic of the review of the assessments of the role of Serbia in 1914, published in "Politika" daily during December 2013.
