Promotion of the book “On the verge of maturity" held

The book “On the verge of maturity – Psychological aspects of choosing the military profession” by Anita Djordjevic, MSc, was presented to the public today, at the Atrium of the Central Military Club. The foundation of the publication is the magisterial dissertation “Affectionate attachment, upbringing styles and professional choice of adolescents” published in 2009, at the Psychology Ward of the Faculty of Philosophy in Nis.

The importance of actions of the psychological service of the military, education within the military education system and educational technical profiles that cannot be acquired through civil education were discussed by Prof. Desimir Pajevic, PhD, professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade and the book’s critic; Prof. Jelisaveta Todorovic, PhD, associate professor at the Faculty of Philosophy i Nis; Jelena Minisc, PhD, Faculty of Philosophy in Kosovka Mitrovica and the author - Anita Djordjevic, MSc, associate researcher at the MoD Strategic Research Institute.

The guests were also addressed by Prof. Jovanka Saranovic, PhD, Director of the MoD Strategic Research Institute, who spoke about the Institute’s achieved results and goals. She added that such and similar researches are necessary within the defence system and that the structures dealing with human resources should pay closer attention to the reached results.

Prof. Pajevic spoke about the research of the staff quality for completing the defence system and motivation and issues occurring during the researches, and suggested that the research results should be published.

- The monograph is an empiric work of high quality which is, in theoretical sense, based on the theory of affectionate attachment to the family and is methodologically perfectly envisioned. A new theoretical foundation has been given for researching factors that affect the choice of profession, especially when it comes to military profession. Although it is somewhat of a continuation of earlier researches, the subject is new, original and based on scientific research. Psychology is a much needed science in the military, and I am glad that the defence system is “open” for this kind of research – Prof. Pajevic said.

According to Prof. Todorovic, there is great importance in the research on the theory of affectionate attachment linked to the profession of participants – students of the Military and civilian Grammar Schools.

- The difference between them is reflected in the emotional and professional maturity. The research has shown that students of the Military Grammar School are more prepared to make the steps on the verge of adulthood. I recommend to everyone to read the book because they will learn what has been discovered and what situations they can recognize themselves in – the professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Nis said.

Jelena Minic stressed the importance of age of participants – the period of adolescence, where family relations are important for forming of an identity, predominantly the professional one.

The author explained the need to research the dominant force of our military – a person, who decisively affects its quality, so the choice of candidates for the officer profession is all the more binding.

- The monograph was created as a result of work during the selection of staff for military professions, and the possibility to turn practical psychological work into a methodical draft, empirical research and conclusions of scientific research works. The idea for me to research the characteristics of families of students of the Military Grammar School was born after numerous interviews with Military Academy cadets who wanted to be generals, colonels, to wear the uniform as their ancestors had and to be admired. The issue of the link between the family context with the choice of future profession has not been researched within the military system so far, and that is why I would like to thank all associates who contributed to this book being published – the author said.
