Matica Srpska, our oldest national literary, cultural and scientific institution, was founded in Pesta in 1826, and the idea of its moving to Novi Sad appeared in 1852. Twelve years later, it was relocated to the castle of vladika Platon Atanackovic in Novi Sad. The year of foundation of the Gallery of Matica Srpska is considered to be in 1847, when the Museum was founded in Budapest within Matica Srpska, from whose art collection the Gallery came to be. Since the very beginning, the Gallery has collected, preserved, studied, presented and interpreted works of art of the Serbian cultural heritage.
